Electronic Research Laboratory

Developing the cars of tomorrow, at home in America.

At our Electronics Research Laboratory (ERL) in Palo Alto, Calif., we employ a creative and confident team of mechanical engineers, electrical engineers, software engineers, social scientists, and product designers committed to developing the cars of the future.

The ERL is positioning the Volkswagen Group of America (VWGoA) to become the epicenter of expertise for vehicle electronics in North America.

In recent years, the ERL has collaborated with various academic institutions, including its neighbor Stanford University, on autonomous projects. Two results of the ERL-Stanford University partnership are: Stanley, an autonomously driving Volkswagen Touareg that became the 2005 DARPA Grand Challenge winner, and Junior, a Volkswagen Passat wagon that was the 2007 DARPA Urban Challenge runner up. Both projects have provided a heightened understanding of vehicle dynamics, control systems, and sensor optimization.
